Who We Are
We are Mainers. A group of dedicated volunteers with the mission of: "…reducing the burdens and maximizing the benefits of AI for the citizens of Maine, with particular attention to the Mainers most easily left behind: rural communities and lower incomes."
AI is changing Maine — its economy, its institutions, its everyday life. National resources can’t tell Mainers what’s relevant to them specifically. All of us — citizens, businesses, nonprofits, and government — face choices about AI: whether to use it, how to govern it, when to resist it. Those choices are being made right now, across Maine, often without enough information to make them well. MAC exists to change that.
Our goal is to make MAC a resource, a convener, and a library so that Maine citizens have the information they need. We are rigorously nonpartisan and decision-agnostic. We seek to give citizens the information they need to make choices, not make the choices for them.
What We Do
- We provide organizational support and infrastructure to AI Communities of Practice (CoPs) for different segments of the Maine community. Each CoP focuses on the uses and impacts of AI for that segment. While MAC is decision-agnostic, CoPs may not be. What we do require is that discussions are civil, nonpartisan, and noncommercial.
- We collaborate and support the work of other nonprofits and educational institutions. We act as a switching point, a reference library and potentially provide support to their communities of practice.
